Fear of a Real-Life ‘Godzilla’: A Monster Alarmingly Close to Humans

The Iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus) is a marine lizard endemic to the Galápagos Islands, off the coast of Ecuador. This is also one of the rare lizards and reptiles that can live in the sea and is known as the Godzilla monster of the ocean . These lizards are often found in rocky coastal areas and sometimes in coastal marshes or mangrove forests. Compared to the Godzilla monster, this lizard is much smaller in size with a length of less than 1 m and a maximum weight of 12 kg. However, its scary appearance reminds people of the legendary monster. Iguana sea lizards have rough skin, especially the skin on the head. Long legs with sharp claws, along with large, sharp teeth that make anyone who sees them have to run away. However, this appearance has often caused them to be wronged because in fact, Iguana sea lizards are not carnivores. Instead, they use sharp teeth structured like scrapers to scrape algae clinging to the rocky ground for food. Marine iguanas These lizards often live in groups on rocky beaches, they come close and warm themselves together after soaking in cold water. Iguana sea lizards have excellent swimming ability, likened to the ”dark demon” on the beaches. They can dive up to 30 m deep and stay underwater for an hour. Iguana lizards are classified by IUCN as vulnerable species, protected under Ecuadorian law when threatened by the El Nino phenomenon, causing their food supply to decrease. Currently, there are only about 50,000 individuals of ”Godzilla” living on the Galapagos islands. Godzilla monster under the ocean eats algae. Source: Youtube
